The (artist) and collectives in their move from (or perhaps it is more correct to say between) the traditional white cube and art as object, to public space and domains where art possibly can emerge in the encounter and possible experience. As such an indefinite number of participants take part, forming different kinds of contact, from interaction and participation, co-operation and collaboration, to the development of temporary events/labs as well as more longitudinal and alternative practices.

In Art, anthropology and the gift Roger Sansi (2014) suggests how the encounter itself is a significant space in these socio-material practices, situations in itself to consider in order to move past the problems associated with the boundaries between art and anthropology as addressed by Hal Foster in his seminal essay “The artist as ethnographer” from 1995, where he formulates a critique of the uses of artist and ethnographic authority in the advent of a discursive turn in art and knowledge production. Beyond such critique of power and representation, Sansi brings into focus how the relations and situations significant for social practices, relational aesthetics, and the like, open for new considerations of the spaces created in the intersection between art and ethnography.

It is within this space of an encounter that an alternative site for the production of knowledge and experience arises. A kind of knowledge of the heart, a song without explanation.
